Fairly new in the Old School community he’s soaking up all he can from this great format. Now he’s already willing to give something back. Check out his guestblog below:

Introduction

First time blogger here. I hope this will be informative or otherwise entertaining for you. In the first place, maybe some introductions are in order. My name is Ferry, live in the Netherlands and I started my Magic adventure in 1995 with fourth edition. Ice Age was still in the store, as was Chronicles. Ice Age could not grasp much of my attention, but I opened a lot of fourth edition and Chronicles. I started playing with my best friend and later with my two brothers too. When Alliances came out, this was a whole new ballgame. When later Mirage and Visions came out, I was fully hooked and played weekly at a local venue. I went to pre-releases of the following sets a lot and was fully committed to what then was called Type 2. I kept up the playing, brewing and buying until about 2003. But then life got in the way, and I gained some new responsibilities. That is what growing up does to you, I guess. With all the new things in life, Magic was too expensive to keep up with, time and moneywise. I sold everything…
Regretted it years later, but what can you do? Magic disappeared to the background.

About two years ago I got in touch with Magic again. There was a new format: Commander, which was played widely, even in my community. I bought some singles and started playing with friends and colleagues. During my rekindling of the love for the game, I found some Old School Swedish videos online. I remembered those cards! And I instantly fell for the all too familiar Magic-trap… again…

Now, fast-forward to today, I was joining DadBodCon IV in Utrecht The Netherlands. I was going to be my 3rd Old School tournament since my long pause in Magic. I have been fascinated by the decklists I saw online and started to brew my deck months ago. I was trying to find a deck which both suited my playstyle and budget, because I wasn’t going to spend hundreds of euros for my deck. I needed to control myself and keep within what my wallet allowed. Luckily a lot of these Old School tournaments allow reprints, which means I could focus on the cheaper versions in Revised, Fourth Edition and Chronicles and not break the bank in the process.

Deck of choice

The deck type I landed on was ErhnamGeddon. Lots of cards in this deck are affordable and easy to find. The Erhnam Djinn’s come from Chronicles, the “white package” was from Fourth Edition and most cards are common or uncommon. After some playtesting and request for advice from the community I got a surprise in the mail (thanks again Bram!). It was the most beautiful Legend I could imagen: Jasmine Boreal. Which basically is an Erhnam Djinn for one mana more, but with no downside. Looking at this card, which was going in my deck 100%, I looked for other cool Legend cards which could also enter my deck. I found Torsten von Ursun, Sir Shandlar of Eberyn and Rubinia Soulsinger. I loved those cards from the past and they made it into my deck.

ErhnamGeddon and Friends

The deck is not your typical ErhnamGeddon deck. Sure, those two cards are in there. But other staples are missing from the list. No Sylvan Library, no Land Tax, no Demonic Tutor, no Blue splash for Serendib’s and most notable it was powerless. Mind Twist and Library of Alexandria were extra banned under the Gentlemen Rules of the tournament, not that I owned a LOA, but still.
Instead of these missing staples, I had more creatures and more creatures. The idea I had with the deck was: it should Ramp (like Commander) into big beaters. And when my opponent deals with the threats on the board, I would topdeck a new one, because I had so many in the deck. Armageddon was off course also a game ending card, I hope, but was not really needed for the deck to what I wanted it to do. Would this work, I didn’t know for sure. But the deck looked very fun, and I got to play with the Legends I loved. It had interaction but the main focus was getting a threat on the board and start the beating.

With some nerves in my body, I arrived at the venue for DadBodCon IV. There were around 70 players expected to be playing today in seven rounds of swiss. No top 8 would be played, and prices would be based on final standing and tiebreakers. It was crowded but there was a relaxed atmosphere. At the local vendor for cards I scored a last minute Pendelhaven, which was banged up. Hopefully it would tap for green mana and could give my elves some boost (it is already included in the deckpicture).

Re-cap DadBodCon IV Utrecht Netherlands 19 sept 2026

Round 1 – Powered ErhnamGeddon, Edwin
After a few re-pairings, which they told me is traditional at DBC, I was sitting across Edwin. Later I realised we had contact over internet and I bought some Revised Serendib Efreets a while back from him for another deck I am building (standard Magic pitfall). We started to chat about the tournament and how we got to (re-)start in Magic.

Game 1 was very close. My deck did what I expected, ramp into ging Djinns and Serra Angels. But Edwin matched my ramp with his moxen, his removal with my creatures and eventually Armageddon-ed. With his moxen still available he was ahead and won the game.

Game 2 was more equal. I got in some hits with my creatures and he did too. When I dealt with his creatures he reacted by Control Magic-ing my Pixies because it was dealing a lot of damage over the turns. I played bigger threats to match the Pixies but eventually he had just the right removal at the right time.

Powered ErhnamGeddon

0-2 games
0-1-0 round 1

Round 2 – Mono Red Burn – Martijn
For the second round I sat down at a table with a high number. This was a bit depressing, but not all is lost. I knew winning with an unpowered deck against powered decks is harder than it seems. So, I wasn’t that negative about round 1. Sitting across Martijn was a joy. He was a very nice guy who also got back into Magic a few years ago. We exchanged stories while we shuffled up to play.

Game 1 Martijn had to mulligan twice because of no lands. When he got down to five cards it looked very grim because he was on the play too. He started with only a Mishra’s Factory, while I could ramp with Birds of Paradise. When he finally played a mountain, I drew a Strip Mine. It was over fast after that.

Game 2 things looked up for Martijn. He started with a Black Vise followed by another Black Vise and the turns after that he burned me with multiple red spells. Because I was on the play the Black Vise’s were hurting a lot and my own Cities of Brass didn’t help. I did get out some creatures to start attacking of his lifetotal. It came down to one turn. I was on 1 life and had a Serra out, while he was on 3 life. I played Armageddon, because I figured, if he would draw a burn spell it would be over. If he draws a mountain after the Armageddon, he also needs a burn spell to go with it. He drew the mountain but lacked the burn in his hand.

Mono Red Burn

2-0 games
1-1-0 round 2

Round 3 – TripleS – Luc
When the third-round pairing were up, I was looking around to find the table number I was supposed to play at. I only looked at the table number and did not notice the person I would be playing, but clearly, he did look at my name. From afar he waved at me, which was curious, because this being my third Old School tournament in years I did not know that many players yet. But Luc remembered me from the second tournament I played a few months back. We did play against each other then and had great fun. As soon as I realised who was waving at me, I was so happy. Luc is an amazing guy and a very good player. Last time we played our games were close and had some awesome plays during those games.
During settling in at the table and shuffling we had an exchange of memories from the last time we met and we both looked forward to this match. I remembered what he played back then, although the format was different. It was a coreset only format so only ABU plus Revised was allowed with a reprint policy.

Game 1 I started with my Ramping and played some creatures. But before I could get in for lethal damage he removed them one by one and took control of the game.

Game 2 was more for me. I sided in some dervishes for some of the higher casting cost creatures, because I thought he would regain control if the game would take too long. Early pressure would be key. And here it worked. He countered some stuff and removed some stuff but the threats kept coming and he could not stabilize in time.

Game 3 was a lot of back and forth. He had early Lions which chipped away at my life total. I dealt with the Su-Chi’s he played, but it didn’t help. A balance cleaned it all up, but later his balance cleaned my side up. Eventually the game went on too long and Luc did what I feared. He gained control and used braingeyser to get more advantage over me. After a while time had been called and we were going into turns. The chipdamage of the Lions were too much and I was too low to make it through the extra turns. If I remember correctly, he finished the job with a Fireball to the face.

(Deckpicture is missing on request of Luc)

1-2 Games
1-2-0 Round 3

Round 4 – Tempo Aggro – Donavan
I had also played against Donavan last tournament a few months ago. We recognized each other and had a good talk before starting the match.

Game 1 I didn’t know what he played and was surprized by his tempo. Using Birds and Rituals to get out Erhnams and Sengirs fast was scary. I dealt with them, got a Serra on board and Armageddon-ed. Tense game, but I brought it home.

Game 2 mana was not on my side. Birds and Elf got fireballed 2 for 1. With not much in my hand I Armageddon-ed to stall the game. But he drew lands where I did not. He got out a threat and I never recovered my mana.

Game 3 I mulliganned to 6 cards and kept a 1 land hand with a Birds. I really didn’t want to go to 5 cards being on the play. Donovan also mulliganned to 6 and kept a 1 land hand. He topdecked a land and started to destroy my mana. Strip Mine and lightning bolt kept me low on mana sources but he didn’t play any threats. Struggling to get my available mana up to at least 4, holding a Serra, Jasmine and Erhnam, he kept controlling the mana sources. Elves and Birds died, but still no threat. Eventually I managed to get enough mana and we had a Erhnam standoff. He had to give one of my creatures forestwalk, which was an Elf. I had Cities and a Pendelhaven for green mana, but kept my forests in my hand. With my Erhnam on blocking duty the Elf could walk over safely for damage. This time I could test my newly obtained beat-up Italian Pendelhaven tapping it to give my Elf +1/+2 during the attacks. I was worried for a second, but when I tapped the worn-out land it worked! The Pendelhaven groaned and looked angry at me, but it still had some energy left in it. I could play out a Serra not much later and went in for the win.

WBGr Tempo Aggro

2-1 Games
2-2-0 Round 4

Round 5 – TripleS – Frank
This round starts like a deja-vu moment. In the middle of the room a guy starts waving at me. He looks familiar. What, is that Luc? Do I have to play Luc again? When I approached the table and shook his hand, he introduced himself as Frank and asked me if I played his brother earlier. Then it clicked, he was the twin brother of Luc. We had a great laugh about this and Frank was exactly like Luc, happy, cheerfull and very supportive of his opponent (me). Whenever I did a nice play he congratulated me just like Luc did. It was such a pleasure to play against both of them today.

Game 1 my ramping outpaced him. He did deal with a lot of my threats but I did deal with his threats too. Jasmine did some very heavy lifting this game and took it home.

Game 2 was too close for my liking. The situation was so tense. He chipped away my life total with Lions and Su-Chi’s. I did deal with them with a well-timed balance, but I was afraid it was too late. He did not play more threats and I was glad I did not board out my Legends this time. Sir Shandlar and a second Erhnam were very hard for him to remove because of the high toughness. We were both very low on life when he used Demonic Tutor to search for a card. It took him some time to decide and it landed on a Balance, but not before he unloaded his hand, disenchanting two of his own Moxen. After the balance I had no creatures left and he had a Mishra’s Factory to attack with. Both of us were emptyhanded. I topdecked a Pixies, which could block his factory, preventing lethal. Also, if he did not deal with the Pixies I would walk it over next turn for lethal myself. He had one turn to topdeck an answer… which he didn’t get.
This was so awesome and we both laughed. So close of a game. If he would have found a lightning bolt or fireball he would have won, but it wouldn’t have mattered for me. It was such a joy of match, I wouldn’t have cared if I lost.

Tripple S

2-0 Games
3-2 round 5

Round 6 – 12-bolt eel/efreet – Herman
This round I was up against Herman and his beautiful UR 12-bolt brew. It was quite original with Electric Eels and Ydwen Efreets.

Game 1 I got out an early Erhnam which he places a Ydwen Efreet to block but loses the flip. I swords the Efreet later and raced him while he used burn and Ball Lightning on me. But the Erhnam kept coming for him and an Armageddon sealed the deal.

Game 2 I used a Strip Mine to limit his options and my creatures just overran him. He did play some Fork and Eels. But my damage output was too big for him to handle.

UR Eel and Efreet

2-0 games
4-2-0 round 6

Round 7 – Valley of life and Death – Bas
The deck I was facing in the final round was very interesting. Bas played with walls, Rukh Eggs and Diamond Valley. Next to that he played a lot of Red and Blue burn with draw sevens. His deck, as he explained after the match, was built to stall and finish with burn.

Game 1 I Striped his Mountain turn 1 and he really never recovered from that. He had some colorless mana, but his Red mana came too late.

Game 2 he played out 2 walls early combined with a Gravity Sphere. His burn was in the second half of his deck, because he didn’t draw a lot of it. I figured I needed to have more attackers than he had walls to make sure I to get any damage in. Even my Serra looked confused when she had to “walk over” because if the Gravity Sphere and was blocked by a Wall of Earth. Not waiting for Bas to stabilize I kept attacking with more then he could block and soon after I had lethal on him.
Game 3 we did as an extra. There was some time left in the round, so we started a new game. Now Bas’ deck worked like clockwork. Before I could get some damage in, he burned me, wheeled, burned me again for lethal. It was very fun to see the deck work and I realized I got lucky, or Bas just got unlucky in the first 2 games.

Valley of Life and Death

2-0 games
5-2-0 round 7

Conclusion

After a day of very good of Magic, my ErhnamGeddon and Friends went 5-2. I had some very close games and met a lot of nice people. Seeing some of the players again and even being recognized made me very happy. The plays I made were good and I think I didn’t make many bad plays. Yes, the hail Mary Armageddon in round 4 against Donovan might not have been the best decision, but at the time I had good reasons to do so.
The deck I played surprised me, because it was able to go toe to toe with many powered decks which on paper looked very strong. But in the end, I was positioned at 12th place, which was also the highest unpowered place. I played 6 matches against decks fully powered or having some kind of power in it. It felt good to me as a budget player to be able to compete in a powered meta.
But besides that it was an absolute joy to play the Legends in the deck. Being able to hit with Jasmine or Torsten made my opponent’s smile and getting Rubinia bolted or swords-ed because she was too good at the time, gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling.
Seeing other non-archtype decks was a good experience too. The creativeness of players with the limited cardpool of Old School is a great sight to behold. Lots of cool cards were being played.
I would like to thank the organisation for an awesome hosting and all players for a great time together.
