(Old School) Magic: The Addiction

I know I’m not the only one but this game is really an addiction. My day starts like this:

  • Check What’s App for messages (including Magic related ones)
  • Facebook (nowadays mainly for Magic sales posts)
  • Instagram (especially now that oldschoolmtg is doing his #marchmtgmadnesstournament)
  • EBay (You never know if somebody sells something dirty cheap)
  • Marktplaats (A Dutch Ebay, same reason as above)
  • Old School Discord (I didn’t have enough to read while commuting so installed Discord, big mistake)

Then during the day, I repeat this cycle whenever I can. When it’s been too long since I’ve last done it: FOMO. I’m like a drug addict looking for his next shot. When I have a little bit more time I read/watch anything I can get my hands on. I search Reddit for new stuff, go on YouTube to watch either Rudy, Timmy or OpenBoosters and when I’m commuting I prefer to sit alone and listen to the All Things Considered Podcast.

I’m buying/selling/shipping cards multiple times a week, try to meet up with my friends once a week to play Magic (which probably averages out at once every 2 weeks, not enough!) and attend an Old School tournament roughly every 2 months. I run to the door when I hear the postmen, #mailday is the best day of the week!  Often before I go to bed I’m brewing/tweaking decks in my head (I can recommend trying to brew a T1 Old School Enchantress deck if you want to stay up all night!). About once a month I unsleeve all my decks (I always have 3/4 decks ready to play) and resleeve my new brews. Since that wasn’t enough, I’m now organising my first Old School Tournament, I’ve started this website and I’m still considering how I can create more content for this great community.

My Magic Anonymous coach told me that admitting that you have an addiction is the first step towards salvation. I hereby admit that I have an Old School Magic addiction. I’m now going to tweak my deck for the Hill Giant Cup in Hilversum and will check if I’ve missed anything on the internet while writing this post. It’s been at least an hour since my last shot!

Started playing in 1995 when Ice Age was launched and quit playing in 1999 since I didn't like the fast rotation of cards. When I heard about Old School Magic in 2017 I returned to the scene and now I'm spending way to much time on Magic, loving it all the way!
